Research Projects

My main areas of interest are the Caucasus, Japan, and the Arctic. Although my background is in history (specifically, genocide history), I have experience working with a variety of multidisciplinary qualitative methods.

EAST ASIA AND THE ARCTIC

The focus of my MPhil thesis concerns the growing ambitions of East Asian states in the Arctic region. Often a geopolitical afterthought in the 20th century, the impacts of climate change have placed a renewed focus on the region in part because of the potential for access to minerals and the opening up of the Northern Sea Route. To varying extents, Japan, China and Korea each have aspirations in the region. What exactly are they, and who stands to benefit?

ARMENIA AND TURKEY IN MEMORY AND POLITICS

I am currently working on two parallel projects which concern aspects of Armenia's complex geopolitics. The first, written with a colleague at the American University of Armenia, is a discourse analysis of works by a prominent Armenian statesman and academic. The second, the outcome of a research project undertaken at the Tsitsernakaberd Armenian Genocide Memorial Complex, reflects on the role of the site in the development of post-Soviet Armenian national identity.
